Colour and Abstraction with Kitty Stirling

This course will explore mark making, colour and composition. It will include looking at the work of both 20th century and contemporary artists to learn and reflect on their techniques. We will learn about mark making as a means to build up surfaces and textures, with colour as a tool for formal spatial qualities and composition to learn about the possibilities within the rectangle.
Beginners are welcome.
Kitty is a London based artist whose studies have included Chelsea School of Art and Byam Shaw School of Art. She has taken part in many solo and group exhibitions and is currently doing an MA at City and Guilds of London Art School. Kitty is a trained and experienced teacher of art and has been tutoring private groups for adults over the past 15 years.
Small Beginnings, Big Paintings - and expressive painting course with Eleanor White

This two day course will take its inspiration from small flower still lifes in the studio with mood, colour, and atmosphere in mind. From this simple starting point through observational painting students will use expressive mark making and simple collage. Mixing of colour will be a focus and a set palette will be used. The aim for the two days will be to see through a composition and arrive at a finished, considered painting from small beginnings. This course will suit beginners as well as those with some experience.
Eleanor is a popular and familiar tutor at Sleningford as well as running her own art school at Ullapool. She also teaches throughout the UK and abroad and is a visiting tutor at Leith School of Art at Edinburgh.
Landscapes in Oil with Christine Pybus
Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th June 2017
Tutor: Christine Pybus
This course will focus on the development of a finished oil painting interpreting the surroundings of the local landscape at Old Sleningford. Using loose, free brushwork the picture will gradually evolve as composition, tones and colour are developed and adjusted. Students will be encouraged to work in a free and open way, allowing for changes as the painting progresses. Each student will work at their own pace in this workshop which is suitable for all abilities.
Christine has had a life long passion for painting, leaving a career in communications to open her own gallery in 1998 and eventually to paint full time. She travels extensively and has painted and exhibited abroad and in the UK, including the Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy and The Russell Gallery in London.
Mixed Media Landscapes - drawing in to painting with Debbie Loane
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th June 2017

During this two day course Debbie will share the wide variety of mixed media techniques which she has developed in exploring different approaches to working with landscape. Students will be encouraged to discover techniques achieved through using water based media, collage and drawing materials. Personal style will be encouraged and the surroundings at Old Sleningford will provide material for figurative or abstract pieces. This course is for those with some experience in painting.
After extensive studies and a first class honours degree in painting Debbie set up the Lund Gallery where she is now based. The infinite variety of the North Yorkshire landscape forms the basis of her work with an emphasis on conveying a sense of movement and time. Debbie has exhibited extensively including The Leith Gallery, Edinburgh and Zillah Bell in Thirsk.
Painting from Drawing - oil with Jake Attree
Thursday 3rd, Friday 4th & Saturday 5th August 2017

With drawing central to Jake's practice as a painter, the first day of this course will be devoted to drawing using the surrounding countryside to discover a meaningful subject for the individual artist.
Day two will begin the painting process, either from life or in the studio using ideas from the previous day's drawing with students discovering their own means of expression. Day three will focus on resolving the work from the previous day with Jake actively advising and engaging each student individually.
Jake Attree has painted since attending The Art School in York in the 1960's and attaining a Post-Graduate Degree at the Royal Academy Schools. He has a studio at Dean Clough in Halifax and exhibits regularly both nationally and internationally. His work is held in numerous private and public collections and he is represented by Messum's of Cork Street.
Black and White to Still Life with Paul Curtis
Friday 8th, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th September 2017
Tutor: Paul Curtis
This course offers a chance to spend three days of continual looking, taking chances, and developing ideas of colour, form, and space to final finished pieces. We will be exploring still life objects initially in black and white through to colour with the objective of creating many pieces in the process. Any medium is acceptable, but the initial materials will be ink, charcoal and white paint. This course is suitable for all abilities.
Paul completed his Foundation and Fine Art degree at Bournville College of Arts and went on to gain his masters at the Royal Academy in London. He has lectured in FIne Art for over 30 years and now lives between London and Sheffield, painting and delivering workshops and courses on painting and drawing throughout the U.K. He has exhibited in a wide range of group exhibitions.
